Sounds Like Learning | Kohl for Kids



		Music Activities for the Whole Family It is our firm belief that music is an invaluable tool to help in the teaching of academic subjects. A 1996 grant from Oracle Corporation enabled Music at Kohl Mansion to add lesson enrichment materials to the Music in Schools performances for first through fifth grades. These six- to eight-page workbooks supplemented and explained concepts the children learned directly from the musicians each year. Activities were correlated to grade-level California Curriculum Standards for academic subjects. In 2007, the Sounds Like Learning© enrichment guide first appeared online enabling families to share from home the fun of the in-school performances and learning activities. These playful musical ideas will reinforce classroom curriculums in math, language arts, social studies and science, and introduce parents and caregivers to a broad range of online education resources. Select an issue. Preview the activities by visiting the Summary and Goals page, an overview for parents of the in-school curriculum presented by the musical group featured in that issue. When you have oriented yourself: Sit at the computer with your child and share an interactive adventure! Follow directions to fun activities and discussion topics. Work out the answers and have adventures together—you may want to have paper and pencils handy. Though originally designed for teachers, they are effective in home and family situations. Like the online version, each past issue provides goals and objectives, a table of contents, text, pictures, activities and suggestions for further explorations.
