Motivated by the upheaval in our country and recent statements made by arts organizations to decry and denounce racism, we approached Music at Kohl Mansion’s popular resident musicologist Kai Christiansen, founder of earsense.org, the world’s most comprehensive online chamber music database, to discuss the role of Black composers in the chamber music canon. Kai’s response was enthusiastic and immediate, and now we have Black Music Matters – Chamber Music by Black Composers, the launch of a rich, dynamic, searchable database of works by Black composers born as far back as 1745 and continuing through today’s renowned and emerging Black composers of music for small chamber ensemble. More than 100 composers and 1,000+ works are represented! We invite you to visit the site and discover this wealth of exciting repertoire, and to come back often as these pages grow with newly discovered works!
